Match report: Cambridge vs Brize charity cricket – June 29th 2016

MADG Cambridge vs RAF Brize Norton charity match  – June 29th 2016

This year’s match was Cambridge’s turn to host, so Jesus college seemed an ideal venue with members of our very own Marshall family having graduated from there. The stunning backdrop of the college grounds, buildings and thatched pavilion could not be more quintessentially English. Unfortunately that brought typically English weather too with dark clouds and light rain! Luckily after a bit of arm twisting the ground staff allowed us to remove the covers and start play despite the light drizzle. MADG Cambridge batted first. The first wicket falling quickly with the scoreboard on 8, but last year’s star, Ziaf Kulasi partnered with Dave Roberts and put on a further 94 runs. Ziaf had to retire after he passed the agreed 50 runs maximum, reaching the target with a driven four. In the difficult conditions and facing testing bowling by Brize, the MADG Cambridge team finished with 131 for 5.

The RAF Brize batsmen responded with an excellent opening partnership from Ian Barrett and Matt Minter, despite the best bowling efforts of Paul Marshall and Harry Oates. The breakthrough came when Oates rearranged Minters stumps with the score on 40. This brought Abed Rashid to the crease who had the unfortunate role of watching his team mates lose a few wickets whilst he kept up his end and ensured the scoreboard moved swiftly. Rashid was eventually run out but with nice partnerships from Phil Groves and Grant Standerline the score was pushed on. RAF Brize fell short of the target in the eighteenth over, just 13 runs short of victory! So 2016’s Cricket Cup winners are MADG Cambridge.

Man of the Match
The Champagne Man of the Match was a very hard choice this year with Tom Milner’s tight bowling producing four wickets, Ziaf’s clinical batting and Ian Barrett’s brutish striking of the ball to all corners. But the Man of the Match was Abed Rashid with his cementing, crafted batting innings, nice bowling and enthusiastic fielding secured the Champers!

The real winners were the two charities, The Alzheimer’s Society and East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices with presently over £700 raised and still counting.

Next year’s rematch is at Brize Norton, an advance order of sunshine is in the post!

Fantasy Football Season 15/16: Winners announced!

As the MSSC Fantasy Football season 15/16 comes to a close the winners and prizes have been calculated. Please see below the breakdown of winnings.

This is the third year we have run this league and it has proved very popular, with 120 members getting involved in the “Marshall Sports and Social Club” league! For the first time, this year employees from non-Cambridge sites were eligible to win the prizes even if they weren’t MSSC members, as we understand that membership wouldn’t normally be cost effective for them.

Cambridge-based non-members of MSSC are welcome to join the league, but become eligible to win only if they become MSSC members before the end of the season.

Please note that it is our general policy for Marshall employees whose office is based outside of Cambridge, should you ever visit Cambridge on business, the MSSC offers you the use of our season passes and free punting without the need to join as a member. Simply book with the relevant contact, citing the above.

Well done all!

Michael Dennis
